Ellery

kym ellery is the sydney based, director and designer of her eponymous label, ellery. her label is just three years, but already her designs have landed main editorial in vogue australia, harper's bazaar, marie claire and russh. ellery is exclusively sold at black box in nz.  below are some q's and a's, that she kindly answered.

for your latest collection (ss 10/11) 'horreur scope' you took to the zodiac for inspiration, why the zodiac?
i chose the zodiac because i love the personality traits associated with each sign (of the zodiac). it always fascinates me to work out if someone carries their traits or not. i wanted to translate those traits into my collection.

it'd no doubt be incredibly busy being a designer, with the never ending need to create and inspire, how do you keep on top of your game?
it's an ongoing battle to stay on top of things, but i manage! with the love and support of my amazing team we get there and take it one disaster at a time.

how was your central st. martin experience? studying in  london you'd be subjected to an array of different influences, does it (london) continue to inspire you?
st. martins, although short, was terribly sweet. my mother is an artist and art teacher, a lifetime with her has been one big art class, however, my time at st.martins was as giving as my dear maman is. i learnt a lot in an incredibly short period of time.

as asked in the q's and a's with akila,  people in your line of work (fashion, photography, etc) are  seemingly well traveled. where is your favourite place?
as i type this, i am sitting in my apartment in paris, that i have for the next month. i must say, it is my favourite city thus far.

the best thing about summer are...
my favourite thing about summer is the feeling of being reborn each year. you realize the beauty in nature again and how incredible the light looks at dawn each day.

the art of living is...
learning to love yourself as your own being and giving everything you do one hundred and fifty percent.

this blog 'packing for paris' was named with the idea that all girls young and old want to go to paris. it's fashion, photography, art, travel, food and love rolled up into one.  what are some of your parisian observations?
parisian women dress a lot more conservatively than australia, particularly sydney women! it's funny to see the vast difference. also everything made in france seems to be done with such finesse and taste. "c'est tres chic" is what i hear myself constantly saying when in paree.

what are the best places to see, eat and buy in paris?
oh lah, hard question.

eat& drink: a french brasserie, cafe charlot, le progress. the restaurant le fidelite, drinking at le ponpon, le pop in and le baron, among many new others.
see: the museum of modern art and musee picasso in le marais.
shop: there are too many to name. mainly i love george v, printemps, le bon marche, rue fabourgh st honore and i have some secret boutiques i love in le marais and st germain de pris.

i love 'airport chic', in flight essentials, etc. fashion is an incredibly globalised industry, and jetsetting is synonymous with it. are there any secrets to air travel? like things to pack that just make it that little more enjoyable?
my motto is drink lots of water and i always dress with comfort in mind. it's a long flight for us poor southern hemisphere dwellers!
